Mutilated, Altered Or Damaged Notes

Bank Al-Maghrib reimburses mutilated, altered or damaged Moroccan banknotes presented at its counters if they are:

  • Authentic
  • composed of one-piece or of two fragments with the same serial number
  • And if they do not have signs of smearing or contamination by a substance of a dubious nature

The redemption value of notes and fragments of mutilated, altered or damaged notes that meet the conditions referred-to above varies according to the size of their surface. It is determined as follows:

  • Entire face value: if the surface of the note or the note fragment is equal to or greater than two thirds (2/3) of that of the complete note
  • Half of the face value: if the surface of the note or the note fragment is equal to or greater than two-fifths (2/5) and less than two thirds (2/3) of that of the complete note
  • No value: if the surface of the note or the note fragment is less than two-fifths ( 2/5) of that of the complete note

When two notes fragments bear the same serial number, their redemption value is determined based on their total surface.

Stained notes or those contaminated by a substance of a dubious nature, forged notes or those that are likely to enable fraudulent usage or undermine the status of the national currency, should be the object of a review by Bank Al-Maghrib.
