The first major modern port in the Kingdom, the port of Casablanca is a real source of development for Morocco. An old view of the port can be seen on the back of the MAD 100 banknote issued between 1957 and 1959, bearing the image of His Majesty King Hassan II. The mining industry played a key role in laying the foundations for Morocco's modern economy. The reverse side of the MAD 5 banknote issued in 1970 features a view of the phosphate mining complex in Safi.
