The theme of preserving natural heritage and sustainable development has been central to the design of several coin series. The importance of safeguarding biodiversity and preserving the link between humans and nature has been particularly reflected in coin series since the 1970s. |
Minted in 1974, the 5-cent coin features fish in a fishing net under the captain's wheel on its obverse. A similar design appears on the 1 cent coin issued in 1987. Morocco's concern for the protection of the seabed is also represented on a half-dirham coin minted in 2011, featuring coral and the sar, a fish symbolic of the Moroccan coast.

A stylized representation of two sunflowers and a partial view of the sun adorns a 10-cent coin dating from 974. Another plant featured on a coin is the water lily. This precious aquatic plant thrives particularly well in good-quality water. By featuring it on the 20-cent coin issued in 2011, Bank Al-Maghrib sought to raise awareness about the fight against water and air pollution. A globe also appears on the obverse of the coin. In the same 2011 series, a bee is incorporated into the 10-cent coin to draw attention to the massive disappearance of these pollinators around the world. |

The design of several banknotes and coins is based on the theme of rural life and agriculture. In 1970, a beautiful MAD 10 banknote bearing the image of the late His Majesty King Hassan II featured a depiction of a woman packing oranges. |

The argan tree offers real potential for social entrepreneurship and sustainable development in the country. It is featured on the MAD 50 banknote, which was put into circulation in 2012. It also bears the image of a falcon in reference to the practice of falconry, an intangible heritage of certain tribes in the Doukkala region.
